IOM AUTUMN EVENING SERIES 29/9

IOM AUTUMN EVENING SERIES. Four skippers and one dog got together for a mini series on Tuesday last The results shoe that Graeme Harris (41) was clearly in control, Ralph Weller (85) was clearly distracted by his dog whilst Dave Morris (37) and Keith Simmons (78) had a very, very close battle for second place, only being separated by Dave’s one bullet! Thanks to Peter Knightly for acting as Race Officer and to Graeme for mark laying.

DMBC DF65 AUTUMN CHAMPIONSHIP SEPTEMBER EDITION

DMBC DF65 AUTUMN CHAMPIONSHIP SEPTEMBER EDITION Competitors were blessed with fine and blustery weather for the September round of the DF65 Championship. Race Officer Dave Morris organised the racing in our now established “Covid Safe” format which allowed plenty of close racing for the five entrants. It was great to see new racer Neil Dunkley (45) bringing years of full size sailing and race organisation experience to the world of radio sailing and he quickly showed that he is a fast learner. One or two setup glitches handicapped his results but a second place in race six was proof of[…]

Tuesday evening 8th September

Yesterday afternoon the previously planned IOM evening series finally came to be .Due to the Covid crisis this would of been already in existence . I am pleased to say that we had 4 helms take up the evenings racing on what was a splendid sunny afternoon with enough wind to get things going .We, as a class initially had a problem in getting a RO for the job, but Barbara Morley stepped in to run the racing with some minor assistance from myself. The 1 minute and `back to back racing` format which is now our regular start mode ,what[…]

SATURDAY 22nd AUGUST

SATURDAY 22nd AUGUST Covid Friendly racing trial. Six IOMs competed in a friendly two hour race session to test the feasibility of racing whils maintaining safe distancing. I am pleased to say that the session went well and lead to the following conclusions: It is possible to hold a meaningful race whilst competitors keep a safe distance. Six boats were easily accommodated, and it was felt that increasing to eight was feasible. It is possible to fit 12 races into a two hour session. As a result of this successful trial, I am working on a new racing programme to[…]

March Update

DMBC PLANNED EVENTS FOR MARCH 2020 Dear Sailing Member, Below you will find the events planned for the month of March, which will bring to an end our Winter sailing season. February has been a most tricky month for racing with a succession of named storms wreaking havoc on our planned program, with a postponement and eventual abandonment of an event for both DF65s and Match Racing. However, Tom with Dave and helpers have made great progress with shoreside improvements that will benefit all members. March will be the last month with our conventional programming for a while. The decision[…]

DMBC IOM Winter Championship February Edition REPORT and results

DMBC IOM Winter Championship February Edition REPORT It was a surprisingly pleasant morning on Dartmoor on the eve of Storm Ciara, with competitors met with light winds, sunny skies and crisp air. We all knew that it wasn’t going to last, with the big question being: “When will we be changing to B rigs and will we eventually have to go to C?” The forecast has already claimed one casualty of the nine competitors as Ralph Weller (85) had believed the BBC and left his A rig at home…..it was the start of difficult day for Ralph, who was to[…]

DMBC DF65 Winter Championship January Edition REPORT and Results

DMBC DF65 Winter Championship January Edition REPORT Early arrivals at the lake on Saturday were greeted with icy roads, frozen locks, a light mist and an almost undetectable wind blowing from the opposite direction to that forecast. But almost immediately the sun broke through, a gentle breeze established itself from the South and temperatures started to rise. Twelve boats lined up for the start, all sporting A+ rigs and ghosting across the lake in generally consistent wind strengths, although sudden direction swings and mystery puffs were to be the main feature of the day on the standard windward/leeward course. It[…]
