MATCH RACING

MATCH RACING DMBC Experimental Match Racing Morning 1/1/2020. REPORT We took the opportunity of the New Year Bank Holiday to trial match racing in RC Yachts. For the uninitiated, this involves just two boats racing on an adapted course with subtle changes to fleet racing rules. I was particularly keen to see if we could discover a format that works, in particular because only two boats of a particular class are needed for meaningful racing to occur. In the event we had three IOM and Three DF95 helms to see how well match racing worked for their boat class. Feedback[…]

DF65 Winter Championship – December 2019 Report and Report

DF65 Winter Championship – December 2019 It was a typical December day on Dartmoor, with intermittent rain showers and an unstable breeze in terms of both pressure and direction. Racing started with helms on the platform with a windward mark set towards the South corner of the lake, making it tricky to see their boats on their approach to rounding. This, along with gusts and changes of wind direction, made it very tricky for helms. The first four races saw four different winners, It was Dain O’Driscoll (63) who made the strongest start, winning race one, race two went to[…]

DMBC Racing 7th December 2019 Report and Results

DMBC Racing 7th December 2019  It was another fine day for racing at the lake this Saturday.  With both 6m and DF95 yachts due to race and only moderate winds, it was decided to trial both classes sailing on the same course with the Dragonflite 95s starting one minute after the 6m yachts. Other than one incident half way through the day, both fleets managed to sail largely unencumbered. This meant that both fleets could have easily sailed 16 races in the allotted time, although in the event the DF95s only sailed 14 as numbers dwindled.  6m Racing  Doug Penman[…]

Saturday 30th November IOM Winter Championship

Saturday 30th November IOM Winter Championship Thanks to Graeme Harris for this excellent race report: Despite it being a grim, foreboding, cloudy day with threat of rain and gusting winds we had a good turnout of 7 boats with Neil joining later. Races started at 10.30, with a windward/leeward course set by Graeme H, with resident R.O. John Kiff in control The first 4 races rattled off quickly, with Graeme Harris and Peter Cropper sharing the lead on early races, with the rest of the fleet coming in pretty close behind, which was a good sign of the great racing[…]

Race report and Results:  DF65 November 2019

Race report:  DF65 November 2019 The November round of the Winter DF65 Series was blessed with excellent crisp Dartmoor weather with plenty of sunshine and a gradually fading breeze. Eight skippers took part, all sporting “A+” rigs with the exception of Matt Owen, who understandably struggled with an underpowered yacht sporting a standard “A” setup. It was Steve Watts (383) that got off to the best start, with wins in the first two races, with KimVasey (858) enjoying his new bright blue boat and Dain O’Driscoll with his striking yellow yacht (63) and Keith Simmons (825) all hot on Steve’s[…]

SW District IOM Open Event Results

South Western District (IOM) Winter Series Race 1. A fleet of 18 yachts turned up to a blustery Dartmoor today. It is only the forth time this year I have sailed my Rubix (IOM), and during the first part of the morning session it showed. The first race was like a throw back from the 6mtr Championship a few weeks ago. Richard Wills and myself collided. This time damage to Richard’s rig caused him to retire and I quickly followed due to this incident. As the morning continued I struggled with my IOM and the set up of the rig. In[…]

IOM October results and report

The day surprisingly enough turned out well as the bad weather forecast held off ..The turn out was somewhat down probably due to the predicted weather .Still we had 6 entrants to make the day in the first race of the Winter Series for IOM’s .  John Kiff residing as the RO and Recorder .The audio recorder is a handy thing if one is short handed so the race positions were duly laid down for reference later on .   It had looked ominous as far as anyone  would show up for our fast class but the task was taken[…]
