DF65 Winter Championship – December 2019 Report and Report

DF65 Winter Championship – December 2019
It was a typical December day on Dartmoor, with intermittent rain showers and an unstable breeze in terms of both pressure and direction.
Racing started with helms on the platform with a windward mark set towards the South corner of the lake, making it tricky to see their boats on their approach to rounding. This, along with gusts and changes of wind direction, made it very tricky for helms.
The first four races saw four different winners, It was Dain O’Driscoll (63) who made the strongest start, winning race one, race two went to James Scrimshaw (42), It was Keith Simmons (825) that hit the front in race three, with Morley Varker (49) topping the leader board in race four.
By the end of race five it was very close between the top four helms. Likewise, racing was close in the following pack. Peter Knightly (778) had scored a 2nd in race three and was showing flashes of speed. While David Brooke (595) had podium results in two races. Matt Owen (646) was starting to come to terms with the Df65 and showing increasing speed and promise. Alan Williams (854) was struggling a little but was keeping the pack honest.
With very poor weather forecast from mid-afternoon, we sailed a sequence of ten races, with only a brief pause to reset the start line, before a short lunch-break. During the break, the wind swung through south and forced the complete re-orientation of the course.
The restart saw a major shake-up of the fleet. The ability to see the windward mark, was clearly helping some competitors. Matt Owen (646) won two of the last six races and was the second best scorer after lunch. Meanwhile James Scrimshaw (42) suffered some control problems that cost him dear in races that needed only a minor setback to lose multiple positions. Peter suffered battery issues and lost the last five races as a result.
In the end, the final race had the top six finishers in the same order as the final results, with racing completed just before some very rough weather arrived.
In the end, it was a very enjoyable event, with plenty of close tactical racing.
As always, we owe a huge debt of thanks to John Kiff for his excellent race management, ably assisted by Barbara Varker recorder for the day.
I am hoping for a bigger turnout of our class in the January round – looking forward to seeing you all then!
