Yesterday afternoon the previously planned IOM evening series finally came to be .Due to the Covid crisis this would of been already in existence .
I am pleased to say that we had 4 helms take up the evenings racing on what was a splendid sunny afternoon with enough wind to get things going .We, as a class initially had a problem in getting a RO for the job, but Barbara Morley stepped in to run the racing with some minor assistance from myself. The 1 minute and `back to back racing` format which is now our regular start mode ,what with the time factors and safety awareness to the fore . All necessary precautions were taken as is right now with our racing . The variable box arrangement is becoming the normal with some swiftly executed `dance moves `between the one minute gun were done by our contestants .
The Masked Marvels were Graeme Harris, Jerry Lock, Morley Varker plus myself with Barb Varker as RO /Recorder .
The racing itself was pretty close on most occasions on the wind ward leeward course setting.
Graeme once again set the course which was on the near side thankfully . Graeme’s Alternative designed boat took the honours in the main but Jerry’s Slimbo was just shaded out of the `chocolates` by one race who gave Graeme a good run over the track most of the time on the lake .
In fact these yachts tonight were in close company with some serious vying to be done among the lead boats .As the racing progressed to around the last two races it was becoming a bit bereft of wind in it’s final strength for the helms . The penultimate race went to plan `A `until the last race #12 itself.
Jerry Lock and I were having a close race right down to the `gate` in a serious gybing and positional duel for either first or second place. Jerry tried a new method of approach to the gate in only what he could fathom out as we all were highly enthralled including the RO as to what was going to come of it .Meanwhile Morley who was somewhat adrift on us by some distance of us two, suddenly got the final blast to wind from 25mts astern to make up the distance whilst we two were both stymied. Morley got the line honours by being on the right sideof the course. A splendid evenings racing and everyone who was there were glad they made the effort to race this IOMSeries a minor success .
Hopefully the other classes will be taking up the evening options as planned until the evenings make it impossible to do so.
I would like to thank all of you who turned up and to Graeme for the dinghy duty etc and Barb for a splendid job running the line .
